Harshvardhan Kumar, Marine Consultant at Charles Taylor Presents: "Brillante Virtuoso – Anatomy of a Fraud: When a Pirate Attack Isn't What It Seems"

The Sydney Marine Discussion Group is pleased to invite members to a compelling presentation by Harshvardhan Kumar, Marine Consultant at Charles Taylor, who will explore one of the most fascinating and controversial cases in modern marine insurance history.

"Brillante Virtuoso – Anatomy of a Fraud: When a Pirate Attack Isn't What It Seems"

In July 2011, the Brillante Virtuoso, a fully laden oil tanker operating off the coast of Yemen, reported a dramatic armed attack in one of the world's most dangerous maritime regions. Initially appearing to be a routine piracy incident, the case soon attracted the attention of insurers, investigators and legal experts around the globe.

As the investigation unfolded, troubling inconsistencies began to emerge. What followed challenged long-held assumptions about maritime security, insurance fraud and claims handling, ultimately becoming one of the most significant and controversial marine investigations of the modern era.

Drawing on insights from the remarkable true story chronicled in Dead in the Water, Harshvardhan will dissect the events surrounding the Brillante Virtuoso and examine the key lessons for marine insurers, claims professionals, brokers, lawyers and maritime risk specialists.

🔍 Topics will include:

  • The circumstances surrounding the alleged pirate attack

  • The investigation and emerging evidence

  • Insurance and legal implications

  • Fraud indicators and red flags

  • Lessons for today's marine insurance industry

Whether you're involved in marine underwriting, claims, brokerage, law, surveying or maritime operations, this promises to be an insightful session on a case that continues to influence thinking around marine fraud and risk management.
